It was a turning point in my life. I actually made myself and my health a priority for the first time since I had  children. I chose something that would actually replenish me, rather than a shopping weekend, or a night out.

Gaia

About 10 years ago when I was working in the corporate world, with a great job that also had amazing travel. The problem was juggling that with family life and 3 children under 7,  I didn’t feel like I could actually take a break for myself because I was already travelling with work. A close girlfriend kept trying to get me to Gaia in the Byron hinterland, purely for me time. But it seemed so indulgent to spend 3 nights on my own, just relaxing. But I did it, and that is what sparked my interest in retreats.

It was a turning point in my life. I actually made myself and my health a priority for the first time since I had  children. I chose something that would actually replenish me, rather than a shopping weekend, or a night out. In fact, it was so good that I have made sure that I got back there a few times over the last few years and taken several other girlfriends who also needed a break.

From the moment I arrived at Gaia and walked through the beautiful wooden door I felt at home. The relaxed but fashionable lounge, looked over the green hinterland of Byron Bay and it felt so cosy yet stylish at the same time. People traveling on their own, could mingle and make polite chit chat, or keep to themselves and have a quiet read. There was no pressure, no mandatory 6am boot camp. For those keen to try the yoga, it was a stroll up through the paddock to a lovely studio at 7am. All the teachers were good, and had their unique style and catered to people of all levels.

Nourished

The restaurant is another unique aspect of this special retreat. The food is grown in the gardens and of the highest quality; healthy and tasty.  I particularly loved not having to decide what to eat at each meal. Our lovely waiter described the meal and then presented it. Local organic wines were also on offer with the evening meal. They catered so well to allergies, not once did I have to remind them I was gluten free. The staff knew each guest and spoke to us by name from day 1. One time when we had a group of 10 girls staying there, we really started enjoying the wine, and they were so accommodating. They could see we were a group of mums just relaxing and having fun.

Pampered

The Spa at Gaia has an amazing reputation with some of the best therapists from the region. Offering everything from traditional massages, to kahuna or esoteric healing. You almost need an hour to read through all the options. I recommend studying the list before you go, and booking in ahead of time so you do not miss out. I like to choose something I have never had before, or that is not easy to find at home. I have never been disappointed, just wished I could have more.

Day Visit

One of the best things about Gaia is that even if you are not staying there, you can enjoy Gaia in the day. Whenever I am in Byron, I try and make a day of it, booking in for a treatment, relaxing by the pool, then enjoying an amazing lunch at the cafe. Once again, the staff always make you feel so welcome and comfortable, like you are all part of the family.

So I would like to thank Gaia for creating this thirst within me, for retreats, for nurturing me and for ensuring everyone takes time to make their health a priority. Gaia was a major part of my journey, and has helped inspire me to create Mandala Living. Check out their special packages at www.gaiaretreat.com.au
